Elon University - is it as good as it "looks"?

Went to visit Elon w/DS. The campus is of coruse beyond beleif...its beautiful. But, I came away wondering if the place was just a little "too good to be true"; a little "too packaged"? Am I over reacting? Does anyone have any experience with this school? Any thoughts?

I can only tell you that a friend whom I respect has a daughter who goes there, and he is very impressed with it. Might check it out with our DC on that recommendation. Did it seem to have a big Greek community? I know a lot of Southern schools do.

Its one of those "rising" schools that gets a lot of buzz. For the kids for whom its the right fit, I've heard good things.

It was one of my top choice schools back in 2004. Even though I got in, I decided to go somewhere else. Have several friends/acquaintances who have gone there throughout the years. Rumor is they use coloring to get their lawns as green as they are.

Off topic, but I'm curious OP. Do you know what the current male:female ratio is now? When I applied it was something like 30% male, 70% female.

Interesting. All the people I know who went there were solid A and high B students at schools in MA and CT. Most were athletic and all of them were pretty involved in community service.

My 27 year old son went there and loved it. He was an A & B students with a mixture of AP's/honors/on-grade level courses at a highly regarded MCPS high school. He got into a special fellowship program and was mentored by a professor and wrote a research paper and presented it at a conference. He loved, loved, loved the school and he still goes back there frequently for events. He and all of his friends have good jobs in many different career areas. If it is the right fit, you can't go wrong.

Oh, joy.

I can honestly say that I would send my kid to a local community college or a third-tier State University before this place.

I know 2 kids there now who love it. Plus it's less expensive than the top tier of private colleges.

Our HS Naviance shows a GPA of 3.8+ and 1250+ SAT scores are required for admission. Not too shabby.

It looks good on paper but too much Greek life?

Schools would raise their stature if they got rid of the Greek system.

If you live in NC, it isn't looked upon so highly, more like middle of the road, I'd say.

PP here, I don't mean it is looked down on, but it isn't a UNC/Duke/Wake caliber.
