Elon has improved its reputational standing in recent years and is trying to bolster their academic chops. But its limited endowment is hampering efforts. Right now, Elon is more sizzle and little steak (vs. no steak 10-20 yrs ago). My S toured the school and talked to a current student who told him that much that the college does is to bolster its PR but on the ground it is not the most academically interesting or challenging school. There are lots of kids on campus whose first priority is deciding which parties to attend on Fri and Sat nights. Elon has a LONG way to go before it can be mentioned in the same breath as schools like Duke, Davidson, and UNC-CH.

But see 8:21"s point: This is so DCUM. Ignorant pompous people who bash anything SN. These are the same bullies who branded non-traditional learners “retards” when they were in HS. Elon was designed with a mission to serve non traditional learners, so the hate from ignorant DCUM’ers will never die. Elon continues to serve the population of extremely bright kids with learning differences (2e, something the haters don’t like to acknowledge) but over the last 20 years or so the university has become a magnate also for all kids who want small classes, professors who know their name, and a warm, nurturing social and academic environment. That’s why Elon now has such high admission standards (average GPA 3.9 average ACT 27). My kid is 2e and the schools around here that serve these non traditional learners have pipelines to colleges like Elon, so my DC will get in with much lower stats. Well, one hasn't yet graduated. The other one graduated three years ago, mother still raves about his GPA while there but what is he doing now? He's a cop in a backwoods town. Nothing wrong with that, but there isn't even a spark of interest in the world outside of his small community. And I have seen similar outcomes from other students leaving there. It's great for SN kids that don't have major aspirations and for those devoted to service in small jobs. Sorry, but that's a fact.
