Elon University - is it as good as it "looks"?

They seem to be trying really hard over at Elon to improve their school. I think it would be great to go to a school where the admin and prof's are actually working hard to make the school a nice place and really care about the university, and there is emphasis on making the students happy and giving them a good experience. Total opposite of my college experience at a name-brand school, that's for sure.

It's also close enough to drive but far enough away to give DC some freedom.

Please no flamebait....we don't need another JMU vs. Va Tech "which is better for UVA rejects" thread...

I know people whose "troubled" children ended up there.

Is there any specific program your DD is interested in at Elon? The reason why I'm asking is because I grew up close to Burlington. The area is a dump to put it charitably and about an hour away from anyplace interesting (the triad or the triangle). If your DD interested in coming to NC for college, what about some of the North Carolina Publics? With the stats now required for Elon, your DD would probably get into UNC Wilmington, UNC Asheville, Appalachian State, or NCSU. These are all in better locations than Elon and would be significantly cheaper even OOS. If your DD wants the LAC feel then UNCA might be a good choice. It's student population is comparable to Elon's and Asheville is a beautiful city. FWIW, I went to one of the public unis I mentioned earlier and was able to transfer to UNC-CH without too much difficulty, so if Chapel Hill is on DDs radar, that's one way to get in.

If you don't like VA Tech you probably won't like NC State. Asheville is artsy, W is a party school at the beach, and ASU is a party school in the mountains.

Actually, I thought this was a pretty accurate assessment (although I'd put GMU/VCU where you have ODU). And, for better or worse, lots and lots of kids around here are rejected by UVA.

My SIL is from NJ and went to Elon. She loved it and is doing very well for herself in DC as a 20 something. She is also very active in the Elon alumni groups in DC. She is also very willing to attend all sporting events with my brother, a UVA grad! (as you can see from some of the other posters - UVA pride runs deep to almost arrogance)

So you are saying then that upon rejection from UVA, they'll revert to Elon?

Exhibit A. A post from someone who has no actual information but has reached around to find a reason to slur the school.

Most kids don't have the luxury of applying to just one college at a time. So I'd be fine if DD applied to Elon at the same time she applied elsewhere.

My next door neighbor went there. He is smart, seems pretty well-educated, and is doing well for himself (supervisor working for a larger home builder). I think it generally is well regarded (save for those on DCUM who have so much privileged knowledge of such things).

VCU GMU maybe. JMU and maybe vt too are both better ranked....and considerably cheaper

Elon is pretty good actually....I'd say almost on par with JMU or VA Tech, and certainly more selective than ODU or VCU....but it is years off from comparing to UVA

PP here, I don't mean it is looked down on, but it isn't a UNC/Duke/Wake caliber.

I agree. Not from NC but went to Wake. It's more 2nd tier.
