what school system starts ES so early?

I'm in Loudoun and ES starts at 7:50, MS at 8:30, and HS at 9:15.

Mine is ES has to catch the bus at 7:15 and is dropped at the school at 7:35. She has to get up at 6:30 because she can't eat immediately after waking up. So she wakes, gets mostly ready except for her shirt for the day, sometimes reads a bit if she has time, eats, brushes her teeth & changes her shirt, and then heads to the bus at 7:10.

10 y.o. ds wakes up via alarm at 7, gets dressed, comes downstairs to eat breakfast, we are out the door at 7:25. I get up at 6:45 am. We are very efficient in the mornings, largely due to intensive prep the night before--we just get up and go!

what school system starts ES so early?

Not OP, but my prince georges school starts at 7:45.

Loudoun 730.

Its great. The little kids are up early anyway, once they hit high school, school doesn't start until 915.

In Fairfax County and our elementary school starts at 9:20! It's so late!

Ours too and I love it. My kids are not early risers and sleep until 8:15 or so, bus comes at 9.

6 or 6:15 in my house. My kids are lollygaggers, as is my husband. Since I do not want to argue every day, they get up at least an hour before the bus comes.

You are in for a world of hurt in high school, LOL!

I wish elementary started earlier in Fairfax. Once they become tweens/teens the mornings are brutal, plus they go to bed so late with homework and sports. The high school kids need the sleep.

Same here.

If dc still sleeping, I figure they need the extra sleep and wake them up 15 minutes before we leave the house. Clothes are laid out night before, so they just need to wash up and brush teeth/hair. They eat breakfast at school, though. If there wasn't a good healthy breakfast at school, I'd probably add another 15 minutes.

Often they're up on their own, and they read while waiting to leave. Morning tv or ipad never occurred to me. That would be a recipe for disaster in my house. It seems like that would exacerbate attention problems for an add kid, no? It definitely does for mine, with adhd tendencies but not full diagnosis.

FCPS ES, DS starts at 8:30. He is up around 7:15, dresses, eats, brushes teeth, has time to watch TV, play, or read. DH walks him to school.

OP: You know your kid. You will figure out your schedule. Different people have different schedules because of their personalities. DS is normally up between 6:30-7:15 on his own. On occasion, very rare occasion, DH has to wake him up.

Agree. It’s so short sighted to say your 8 yo isn’t a “morning person.” How do you think it’s going to go in MS?

Selfishly I wish our 9:20am ES started earlier too. My kids are very early risers (one used to routinely get up at 4.30 or 5) and are up before 7am typically. I guess the transition to the middle school bus coming at 6.45am won't be as rough as for the poster with the late sleepers.

Short-sighted? Isn't that just a statement of fact? Some kids are early risers; some aren't.

I was that 8 year old who wasn't a morning person. I'm an adult that's not a morning person. And surprise, surprise, I have a child that's also not a morning person. There is nothing shortsighted about it, it is what it is.
Pretty much the entirety of life is a bit rough when we are set up to live and work in a system where early to bed and early to rise, is considered the norm.

It’s short sighted to be glad your young child doesn’t have to wake up early knowing the consequence of that is that the same child as a teen will. It’s better the other way.

Agree. I'm that not-morning person. My mom was too. She's mentioned that my grandfather was as well. There's a genetic component (some interesting studies exist about the extremes of morning people and night owls). Getting up for elementary and middle school were hard for me. Highschool was awful; we started at 7:30am and I was a zombie. I just powered through for 4 years. I never took early-morning classes in college, and as an adult I've been lucky to be able to adjust my work schedule to be the "late" person in my office (starting after 8:30am). I went into having kids thinking they would wake up early and I'd struggle because I don't do mornings well. Well, my DC has never, ever, been a morning kid. Once DC was really sleeping through the night I never had to deal with 6am wake-ups. DC has always been the kid who wakes up at 8am or later. A really early day is when DC gets up at 7:30am. And I'm very aware that middle school and high school are going to be hard, but we're in a district that doesn't start at 7:30am, so it won't be totally awful.

It depends on the child. Not sure how anyone else can answer for you. My 10 year old wakes up 90 minutes before leaving the house. He actually gets ready in a timely manner, but needs time to veg. I'm not a get up & leave person either. I need quiet alone time in the morning or I'll be grumpy the whole day.
