Wow that's early. My ES kid has never been an early riser (just like me). Our ES starts close to 9am, and it has been great for DC. We are a half-hour-prepare-for-school family. We need to be out the door at 8:30 (walking distance to school). DC is up between 7:45 and 8, eats and gets dressed quickly, and is ready to go. DC is also ADHD and the focused schedule in the morning is helpful - we don't need an hour. |
I set the alarm for 6:15, but most of the time my kids wake up before it. In winter they sometimes sleep longer, so I get up and prep a bit and let them sleep until 6:30. They can both be slow in the morning, it’s unpredictable. If they are completely ready they get iPad time, so that’s their incentive. |
Clearly, no one would blink an eye if a parent drove their kid 2 miles to school (also a waste of resources), but if you don't have a car you're supposed to make a kindergartener walk 2 miles every morning? Feel free to sign up! |
DP. My kid is on Concerta. The time between taking it and it kicking in doesn't even count in my book. So if she needs 30 min to get ready then you need to wake her 45 min earlier than the get ready time. So 1 hr 15 min before the bus comes. In my house, it takes 15 min before the kid will get out of bed before waking to go take the medicine hence the 45 mins. |
I would not wake up the kid at 6am for a 7:19am bus. If she showered in the evening, what's the hour and 15 minutes for? She is not in HS where girls want to wake up early to get ready as if it is a debutante ball everyday! |
My kid was on Concerta, now on Vyvanse, makes no difference, she will be fine if she takes it at 6:45am. |
Instead you will have to deal with it in middle school and high school, which IMO is way worse. Our HS kids aren’t tardy until 9:15. |
In Fairfax County and our elementary school starts at 9:20! It's so late! |
LCPS has it’s one issues, but I feel like it got this one right. |
I like to pretend we can do it in 30 minutes, but it's really more of a 45 minutes thing. I get ready completely before the kids get up, so I get up at least 45 minutes before they do. |
My day is so much better if I am up at least a half hour before my kid. |
Mine needs 45 minutes. He doesn't wake up hungry or wanting to eat so it's the last thing he does before we leave.
|
Who are all these kids that you have to wake up?! That would be heaven. Mine are up by 5:30am.
To answer the question though, I would allow 40 minutes. |
My kids wake up about 45 minutes- an hour before they have to leave. They leave about ten minutes before the bus comes.
So if their bus game at 7:19, they would wake around 6:15. |
Fairfax ES here with an 8:10am bus pickup time. DD is normally up around 6:30am on her own, but if she sleeps later we wake her up by 7am at the latest. She gets dressed, hits the bathroom, then downstairs to eat. She does watch TV while she eats, it helps her wake up in the morning (no other meals are served in front of the TV normally, minus family movie night Fridays).
Bus is a 30 second walk from the house, but DD loves to be early so we're out the door around 8am. |
