| I love the movie too, although I understand that the book is even better (which I've never read) and that the movie couldn't really go where the book went because of the ratings board. People were already shocked at the idea of a *gigolo* and being paid for a relationship. I like the movie because of it's statement on the NYC jet set - how phony people are, glamorous on outside but empty on the inside (her apt so bare is supposed to be a reflection of that), superficial relationships, etc. |
How so? She is young and immature, she has a bad choice in men and reasons for choosing men, she is depressed and lonely and drinks too much sometimes. Sounds like most 20 somethings. |
| I feel the same way about Casablanca. Though I think it might be more to do with Ingrid Bergman being one of the most overrated golden age actresses ever. But overall the movie is very overrated. |
| Completely overrated. But then again, a lot of older movies are. I guess it brings some kind of nostalgic feeling to people and makes them feel like it is so amazing, when they are really not. |
| It's based on a completely classic (and very good) Capote novella. It also has Audrey Hepburn in her most iconic style. I think it's largely influential due to the look and fashion of the movie. Also her playing moon river is lovely. |
| I think it is only because she looks so good. otherwize it is too much of its time (don't agree about Casablanca, though. This I think is a great movie about what people will do in times of war, what people will do for love, and very stylish as well) |

I don't think the film itself is necessarily iconic, or critically-lauded, but it is Audrey Hepburn's most iconic role in terms of style (fashionable yet classic, without trying too hard) and attitude (that mixture of jaded and whimsical, combined with intense vulnerability). The film itself has its moments of charm (Moon River), but Mickey Rooney is totally cringeworthy and the plot is light fare. There are dozens of superior movies from that period.
Though I tend to think older movies are undervalued if anything, and film today is completely overrated. |
This. I don't care when the movie was made, as soon as I saw that racism, I was out. |
No, Casablanca is great. Sorry. |
|
Yes, it was the clothes and the music:
http://www.cbsnews.com/2300-500202_162-10009463.html Casablanca is a great film. As is Notorious and Gaslight. |
Don't mean to derail the thread but HELL YES to Casablanca being overrated!! |
This - it is a very stylized movie. There is so much attention paid to her clothes, hair and make up. Designers loved Audrey Hepburn and thought she could wear anything and make it look great. |
Agree. I really like the movie. |
| I liked it well enough, but I liked Sabrina and Roman Holiday better. |
You really suck. I couldn't disagree more. What's an example of a good movie, in your opinion? |
