We went on a college tour at BU and the AO presenting said the average SAT score was 1500. They also take test optional so I’m assuming the 1500 is for only the ones with high scores. But then Duke is also TO and would think they would also be similar 1500+.
I have one junior who is 1500+, straight As, too many activities and awards to list that I am not worried about for college. I have another kid who also has good grades, did not take SAT yet, plays 3 sports and an instrument. Does not do many/any other clubs. Can a kid like this get into BU/BC if he has a decent SAT score and mostly As? |
| look at your kid's school naviance. that will give you more info than you can get from others here. |
| Both are easy with ED and full pay. |
|
The vast majority of students have below 1500 SATs at both colleges.
They also both heavily rely on ED. Boston Univ also will allow you to have alternative admission. Full pay is key at both. |
|
Nothing extraordinary needed as far as ECs. Good grades and ED (full pay) will be enough, a solid SAT would just be icing on the cake.
Avoid RD if you can as half the class fills ED so RD is used for ‘institutional priorities’. |
I think they have a better chance if they apply ED. Otherwise, you never really know. There are just so many students competing for the same spots. I have two kids with similar stats and rigorous course loads who applied through BU RD in different years and requested financial aid. One got in and is thriving there, while the other was rejected, which was quite surprising. |
Being lied to is not a good way to start off a tour. Boston University, Boston, MA 1,083 submitted an SAT (303 submitted an ACT score) 25%-50%-75% 1430-1470-1510 3,268 freshman 2,998 scored below a 1510. 270 scored 1510 or above, or only 8%. Charitably, if you stated half of the ACT submitters had a concordant score (which they don't) you can easily see the lie in the AO's presentation. |
| What do you mean by "decent SAT score"? (And an actual number for GPA is more helpful than "mostly As.") |
|
RD at BC is hard and they 1000% yield protect. From our school they will take deferred ED kids with a 3.5 and reject the 3.95 kids who end up at HYP.
I actually think this is great---love the kids who love you---but just an FYI!! |

BU gets about 80,000 apps a year, which is really high. Overall acceptance rate is about 10 percent. But Regular Decision is about 5 percent.
It's a pretty competitive school these days. Not Duke level, but not an easy admit either. And BU will be mindful of yield. It might be a safety for some, but definitely not most. |
Only 711 enrolled freshman submitted an SAT out of 2,394 total. 350 freshman students out of 2,394 have above a 1500 SAT at BC, or only 14%. 1,434 are taken ED. So 60% of the freshman class are taken early decision. A 1500 SAT scorer applying ED has a very high chance of admission to the point you would call it a safety/target. |
It's beyond time to get rid of TO. Just so ridiculous. |

My DC was accepted BU.
Applied TO as SAT was only 1430 and we were coached not to submit since math score was below 25th percentile. My child had weighted GPA of ~4.1. School does not rank - but my guess would be top 20% of class. ECs were average - things like member of yearbook. Decent service experiences and volunteer effort that connected to major. Very targeted BU specific essay AND full pay. For classmates going to BC this year - service was a common thread. And service - not volunteering. Difference I am getting at - going to an event for an hour or 2 is volunteering. Leaning in and having it be more than another item - making a connection and having it be something that you can really talk about. |
To clarify, for fall 2024 freshmen, 30% submitted SAT, 15% submitted ACT. |
