DD is a junior at Virginia Tech and just sent me a screen shot of a message appearing on Canvas from some organization called "ShinyHunters ... rooting your system since 2019 "
"ShinyHunters has breached Instructure [sic] (again. Instead of contacting us to resolve it they ignored us and did some "security patchers." It goes on to say "if any of the schools in the affected list are interested in preventing the release of their data, please consult with a cyber advisory firm and contact us privately to negotiate a settlement." Threatens to start leaking on 12 May. Massive cybersecurity breach. All of VT is locked out. This insinuates other schools, too. They use Canvas to access all word documents, every assignment and past exam... All tests are through Canvas as well. Basically, our college students are hostage in an cyberextortion event. During finals week. Anybody heard anything about this at Tech or other schools? |
| MCPS was hit |
| yeah any universities that us Canvas are affected. |
|
Apparently several top universities and businesses were hit, like MIT, Oxford, Apple, etc. Thousands of institutions in all.
|
| If they release data, I wonder if the universities themselves are liable for FERPA violations. |
| at this point we don't know if they have data or not - it could also just be what's known as scam-as-a-service. The ip provided on the 'hack message' is known for that. |
APS too. |
RVA HS districts too. Senior Projects had to be submitted today at some schools. Whoops! |
| Oh--I was just trying to check when my kid's assignments were due and got an "under maintenance" message. I guess this is why! |
| UMD too |
| Yale. Schools is over so the kids dont care, but sounds like a ransom issue |
| It's across the nation. |
| Wisconsin is hit - my kid there cannot study for his next exam as all the material is on Canvas. Final week of exams there as I am sure it is for many colleges. UDub hit too but they just finished midterms so not as critical. |
| DCPS is down too. |
