This is just a vent! Currently staying at MIL's house. My niece is getting married this weekend, so we are in town for the wedding. DH wanted to come here for the whole week as she has wedding festivities going on this week. I'm working remotely from her house this week. I lobbied to get a hotel but DH wanted to save money as we are remodeling and have a pricey vacation planned in August. Makes sense, sure, but makes for an uncomfortable week. MIL moved recently into a retirement community and this is the first time I've stayed with her at this new place. In fact, I haven't stayed with her in about 10 years, so things have changed a lot since the last time we stayed. This is what's been happening since Sunday:
- She refuses to turn on the A/C because she is 'freezing'. It is 93 degrees out rn. I am sweating my *** off in this house. - We did not rent a car, mil said we could use hers. I asked her if it was okay for me to use it to go to the gym every morning (6am ish). All of a sudden, no she 'needs' the car at that time. She has slept until 8am every morning. - She wont let us sleep in the same bed. DH is assigned the pull out sofa bed while I get an air mattress located in the 'sun room.' Its hotter than **** in there. We have been married since 2010. (She does this with her other son and wife too). This is a small house - more like a condo - within a retirement community. - I have to work in the kitchen - not a problem as it's at least a table and a chair, but it's an open concept kitchen and her main living room TV is right off the kitchen. DH told her that I need it quiet during work hours as I'm on meetings a lot during the day, and she'd need to keep the TV turned down. She refuses, says she can't hear it that low. Of course, Fox News is blasting. He even offered his ipad and headphones to watch any streaming service, and she refused. - She has her phone out, also with the volume turned up, playing candy crush and watching Dhar Mann Facebook videos on blast, while Fox News plays in the background. Again, refuses the headphones. - DH took PTO so he's not working. He has offered to take her places, offered to go with her to run errands, take her out to lunch...all refused except a quick trip to Home Depot yesterday. It's only Tuesday. We are here until Sunday. I also should say that she is not happy about her granddaughter's wedding so this attitude might be why she's acting this way, but I should say that normally she's tolerable at best and typically very stubborn. |
OP here -- one more thing I forgot -- I told her I was headed out for a walk today on my lunch break. She flipped out and said, "no no no no! You can't do that! This is a retirement community. Only 65+ can use the walking paths or I get in trouble"

omg. Also this can't be true. I'm sure guests are allowed on the walking paths. |
So weird! What is the rationale for keeping you in a separate bed from your husband? |
Find a way to save money somewhere else. And get out of there and get a hotel room. Immediately. I |
Did she invite you to stay with her? Or did DH invite himself and you? It sounds like she likes her house her way (her right) and maybe you guys should go ahead and move to a hotel and get a rental car after all. |
Move to a hotel and if she acts offended tell her it's bc you need to work. |
I'd move into a hotel today. The air mattress and a/c issue alone would seal the deal for me. The Fox News too. Absolutely not. DH can stay there.
I'd also go rent a car. |
Why the F are you still there? I would have been in a hotel yesterday. No matter what it cost. |
The walking path thing is nuts!
As for the rest, this is on your DH, not MIL. He should have opted for the hotel (your accommodations sound awful as is) and there is still time to move along. |
The sum of these parts is intolerable, OP. Taken separately, I would suffer in silence, but all of them? No. I would go to a hotel. Also, does your MIL have dementia? |
Just go to a hotel. And if your husband is mad, let him be mad. |
Team Hotel. What happened OP? |
The rental car will be cheaper than the hotel. Get the car then drive somewhere where you can work alone for a few hours. Being this super cheap is not worth it. |
Ahhhh you have a DH problem not a MIL problem!
Get thee to a hotel. |
