Carrie Bradshaw was not good looking enough for her dating life

She had a good body, was fun and charming, and DTF. If you have all those things it pretty much doesn’t matter what your face looks like. Men care less about the face than the body.

Exactly. This show was definitely not real life but it strived to make the characters somewhat “real”. Not everyone is model attractive and those women weren’t pretending to be models.

I was going to mention the JFK connection too. My husband and I have had discussions about SJP before because he think she’s absolutely hideous while I would have given my right arm to look like her back in the day. All of most popular girls in HS and post college had a SJP thing about them. And, I agree with the other posters who mentioned the Jewish New Yorker ideal. Both my husband and I are Jewish btw… he prefers the softer, dark and curly haired rounder type with bigger boobs. Guess that’s how I landed him

I think SJP is a rotten person who is probably a lot like Carrie. But I do love how angry she makes men. Just the mention of her sends so many of them into a rage. Pretty much every man I know thinks she’s hideous, and they’re actually offended that she’s successful. So for that I love her. But honestly I think she’s a shady woman, and I believe every word Catrall says about her. The rest say what they need to to keep her claws off of them and to keep the money coming.

Generally yes, but irl it’s men who find her disgusting, not women. Not even f-able.

I think it was all in the additude!

Anonymous wrote:Fairly reflective of a certain subset of well-off professional women in NYC during that era. They absolutely address this in the show though -- they never, ever present these women as the prettiest women around. It is a running theme of the show that part of the reason dating in NY sucks so much is that the city is full of actual models and aspiring actresses and if all a decent looking guy with money (or an ugly dude with more money) cares about is looks, he can find an absolutely stunning woman pretty easily.

But the show is also about conversation and connection and the point about these women is the idea that they are actually interesting. That Carrie and Miranda are smart and have ideas and sense of humor and are fun to talk to. And Samantha maybe isn't an intellectual, but she's really smart about business and loooooves sex and is up for everything and also wickedly smart. Charlotte was the prettiest of the four but not model pretty, and also the least interesting. And it's not surprising that she also has the least interesting and in some ways successful love life of any of them. Yes, she marries rich twice, but her first husband is an absolute nightmare. And her second is a great guy but not good looking AND she has to convert to judaism to get him. It's different than in the major relationships the other women have where they get to call a lot of the shots, because their power in the relationship is not just based on being marriage material -- they have personalities that some men actually fall for and want to be around.

A man who just wants a great beauty can find one. And another one, and another one. If he's rich enough, there is no end to the number of gorgeous women who will throw themselves at his feet. And he'll also never really be satisfied with any of them if the attraction is just based on looks because, again, why not try another variety. But a woman who is pretty enough but also really fun to talk to and hang out with -- that's someone you might stick around for. That's someone you might turn to when you get bored with dating yet another 28 year old model or society girl or whatever.

There are entire episodes based around the fact that these women are not that pretty. The one where Miranda dates a "modeler". The one where Carrie falls flat on her face in that runway show where she's a good two feet shorter than everyone else. The "Forty & Fabulous?" ep. Samantha and her plastic surgeries. And so on. The show never wanted to make you think these were gorgeous women or the the show took place in a parallel universe where they were gorgeous. The idea was that these were great women, and their looks were a component of that but not the whole package.

You know you’re way too invested in this tv show, right?

Where are you finding all these men with such strong opinions about Sarah Jessica Parker?

No man has ever flown into a rage over SJP.

She's attractive in a normal person kind of way, like if she worked in your office you would likely say she is attractive, because she is fit and has good style. To be honest, Chris Noth is also averagely attractive in much the same way, so they were probably a good fit as a TV couple.

Is Carrie Jewish? She didn’t seem particularly religious but did not strike me as even remotely culturally Jewish.

Sometimes you just have to have sex to have guys date you..

I don't know any man in real life who thinks she is beautiful.

Oh yeah they have. I’ve hung up on men ranting about how ugly she is and how it’s disgusting that she has a career. Trust me, it’s a thing.

She has a certain style but physically she’s quite unattractive……more horse than human tbh.

All the people saying SJP is ugly are funny . How do we know she doesn't know that ? Or at the very least , how do we know she doesn't know she's average at best ? I mean , I get it , some could feel like there are actresses out there—particularly minorities—with better looks and acting chops who never got the chance to have a shot at a career like hers, though I think SATC is a one hit wonder. But,we know things like nepotism, having the right connections and, in her case ,hailing from the Era where TV shows were overwhelmingly white , couldn't hurt either .

Additionally, men who find her hideous and who can't stand her , do so because they wish a woman they deem offensively unattractive would just crawl into obscurity or something. Instead they find her media coverage ( frankly breathless sometimes) offensive to their aesthetic sensibilities.

I think she’s attractive and sexy. You can be both of these things and not be conventionally beautiful.
