Do I follow up with potential employer?

Hiring manager asked for my references last week and he said that he'd get back to me by this past Tuesday. He hasn't. I don't know if I am the only candidate or if there is another final candidate (or more).

When do I follow up with him?

I really enjoyed speaking with you last Thursday and hearing about the position. After our talk I looked up the article you mentioned and found it very interesting to see where the industry thinks the future of the widget is going. Tuesday as in the day after a holiday? If yes, give it til Monday. At my work we run on a skeleton crew this week and last week. A reference check would likely be set aside for today, tomorrow, or Monday

OP here - yes, I agree that this is the mature and patient approach. A large part of my impatience stems from not knowing if I am/was the only final candidate. Ah well.
