Americans, does it bother you when immigrants complain about America?

What annoys me is when people complain about minor cultural differences like having a dog as a pet, or sugar in coffee. Like…that’s what we do here, get over it.

OP, stop b-itching about “lack of style.” 13 yo mean girls shouldn’t be married.

Wear Hello Kitty everything if you want, OP. One of the nice things about America is that no one cares.

Nope. I’m an American and complain about lots of things I dislike about my country.

The acquaintance from Bolivia constantly bashes everything about the US. She hates our foods, people, education system, government, healthcare, etc. She states all the time that the only reason she's here in the US is to make a crap ton of money before retiring back in her beloved home country. She and her husband are currently building their dream home in Bolivia and expect to retire in the next 2-3 years when her youngest goes to college.

The friend from Russia gets on my nerves because she constantly talks about how ignorant Americans are, yet she still sends her kids to public schools.

Why can't she complain about the state of education in this country? It can and should be a lot better. We spend a crap load of money to educate kids who are virtually illiterate at the end of HS unless parents spend a ton of money to supplement. That is a far complaint and you shouldn't take it personally.

Yes, I find any immigrants who are clearly here only for the economics to be really hard to deal with, especially when their own countries would not accept immigrants.

Also immigrants who leave a place because it provided no economic opportunity, but "clearly has a superior education system." Don't come here and try to turn us into your country. We kicked the world's butt in innovation and productivity without "Saturday" school. Now are we committing educational suicide now due to equity concerns, yes, but that has nothing to do with Chinese education as a model.

Or the immigrants who come here and expect to fundamentally change the values, holidays or traditions here.

Finally, so many complaints from Americans about the U.S. are simply due to ignorance. I would love to have a Study Abroad experience for these people, so folks can understand racism, universal health care and many other topics around the world.

No, I don't believe that a VISA or a Green Card makes you just as American as people whose ancestors paid the price to develop the country. A nation is not just land.

I am often in the company of people who live and work here but are not citizens. When they complain about the US, they seem surprised when I clap back. I guess I am just supposed to listen in silence? When I am a guest in another country, I keep most of my complaining to myself. It’s just rude.

An immigrant who is now a US citizen? Sure, go ahead. That’s what Americans do.

I find it hard to believe that you have done more than a "see 7 countries in 12 days" tour of Western Europe if this is the case.

+1 Maybe during the fly by countries tour the PP forgot to take a real look at how
Anti Semitism is on the rise in countries like France
And how the Brits treat Pakistani immigrants and Indian heritage nationals. It’s a lot subtler there. At least until you give ‘em a few pints and then it all comes out.

Huh, I would describe it the opposite -- racism in Europe is much more overt than in the US, especially in the professional class. I have heard people say things in workplaces and or social functions there that you wouldn't even hear among conservatives in the US, because people here are much more sensitive to being accused of being racist. In Europe, racist attitudes are much more tolerated (it's kind of like being the US in the 60s or 70s -- people will speak out against it but also there is an attitude of "whatever that's just what people of that generation or from that part of the country think." There is less political correctness there. The anti-semitism is also quite blatant and many people who express it don't even view it as anti-semitism. In France, for instance, I have encountered people who will argue with you that these comments are even offensive because, according to them, the stereotypes are true so they are just pointing out the truth. Similar attitudes toward African and MidEast immigrants. Also European politics don't break across the same right-left spectrum as in the US. You have people in Europe who are very in favor of social programs and the high taxes that enable them, but are extremely anti-immigrant (especially against African and MidEast immigrants) because they view these immigrants as being a threat to those benefits for white Europeans.

In the US a lot of racist feelings and opinions are suppressed because people are very bothered by the idea of being accused of racism here. So often racism comes out in passive aggressive ways, or it can be hard to tell if someone is actually racist because they say all the "right" things. Americans also put more stock in politeness and being friendly than Europeans do, so they will couch their racist opinions to try and soften them, whereas someone from Italy or Belgium will just say "well yes everyone agrees Egyptians are smarter and harder working than Somalians" like they are talking about the weather.

It's hilarious that you'd call me an idiot while displaying such profound ignorance yourself. It tracks for your ilk though.

As an immigrant who became U.S. citizen many moons ago, it bothers me when two Germans I know keep criticizing this country.
I asked them why are they still here if Germany is “superior in everything”.

This is what I find so strange. Germany is safe and prosperous. Why be here?

Do you really think that people only come here because they are desperate and poor?

Maybe they are researchers working for a university. Maybe they are senior management in a private company. Lots of reasons to be here.

What's sad, not hilarious, is you haven't a clue what damage the open border crisis is currently causing our country especially our children's future.
We have huge Increases in fentanyl smuggling, human trafficking, illegals exploiting our tax paid resources, additional crime, huge increases in MS13 gang activities, etc.because of your ilk.
You are profoundly clueless.
