You don't see that we are in a big dip right now? You think people today are interested in how hard it is today vs 1985? Or more recently, when the other stats can be practically compared? |
A lot of us moderately ancient parents went to college around 1985 through 1995. For us, that's the frame of reference, not what happened in 2005, or 2015. |
I believe the common app was created in 1975. I think that the internet makes information more accessible. Combined with the common app which makes it so easy to apply to multiple schools and applications I would think would have to be up. I also remember reading that the amount of international students is the largest of the applicant pool that is growing in size. Foreigners tend to pay full price so a lot of recruitment is targeted to the international community of students. |
Funny how today is what matters to most people. Especially those applying or with kids applying. Tell more more about 5 cent candy bars and George Mikan's deadly set-shot. And what a hottie Theda Bara was! |
Of course, but many of us parents are always trying do mental conversions between our world admissions and kid world admissions. |
My son applied to four. That was plenty. |
Oth of my children only applied to one. Surely the dramatic increase in ED apps is impacting the average app per child. |
Exactly! |
I graduated from HS in 1982, I don’t remember the Common AP being around. |
Until Trump, there were also more seats taken by foreign students. |
Ok...being utilized and created are different things but my point is that it is not new. |
Good. I hate Trump as a Democrat but between his position on Asian American Discrimination through his Justice Department and the foreigners from China and Arab countries’ kids talking our slots, he is tolerable. Not to mention the economy booming and markets doing well. He might get re-elected. My kids are Asian and first generation and strongly feel we will be squeezed out. We are full pay and a doughnut family. |
Same here. Asian and full pay. |
No. That is not the answer. The number of college students grew from 13.8M in 1990 to 19.9M in 2018, an increase of 44%. Over the same time, the population grew by only 30.4%. Your logic would only work if the number of seats at the colleges did not grow as fast as the population. |
It can go beyond the ease of Common App. In California, all you have to do is check a box to apply to more than one or even all UC schools. Note that of the schools analyzed, Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSD, and UC Davis had significantly higher admission rate decreases than UVA. Virginia's population actually grew more than California's since 2006. UCLA alone got 113K applications last year. |
