Illegal Investor houses are artificially inflating home values and therefore restricting op’s buying options. Op is absolutely in the right to expose this. Why would you feel sorry for an out of state investor ?

In a casual hopeful browsing of recent listings (none for sale, of course), I did spy a rental, but on a university website for grad students looking for housing. Was intrigued and opened the link. Is being rented out on a room by room basis, targeted to university grad students. I looked up the ownership and it's owned by out of state owners, and surprisingly, it had sold last fall for a tidy sum.

I sent the link to the neighborhood president and said this doesn't seem legal. A few days later I got a response, they were not aware either and have notified the city, who confirmed it's not a legal situation and zoning caps house to just three unrelated people but house is also not registered with city as a rental either and to be registered as a rental it needs to meet certain requirements etc cetera. Housing inspectors are being deployed as we speak.

So... someone is getting into trouble, potentially expensive trouble. All because of me. Can't say I feel rosy about it. But for any wannabe investors out there, be really careful and know what you're getting into before you decide to invest in renting a house in a family neighborhood.

Are you the neighbor who keeps nosing into work from home, how often people take walks, etc etc? You seriously need a hobby.

It is probably owned by one of their parents as an investment property and totally fine/meets the 3 unrelated people criteria. It is incredibly common for parents to finance a purchase and rent a couple of rooms like this.

As stated, we feel bad for the grad students, who are universally poor and will have to find something else on short notice.

I feel sorry for the grad students in this case, but why is everyone standing up for whatever greedy, absentee “investor” is doing this?

I think PP w all the nonsense about “managed” students was referring to Chinese people? Does that change the calculus for PP and make these actions more acceptable?

There are so many international students in most graduate schools. Why pick on the Chinese when you have a wide variety of groups to choose from? And...

WHY BE RACIST IN THE FIRST DAMM PLACE?

No, it's not ethical or moral to tattle on someone's rental situation like this.

I reject the surmise that it eventually makes life better for future renters. There are rules and regulations in place, and OP is an outsider who should not have made that step. Neighbors can do that.

OP is an awful human being.

So you want to move into what sounds like a very MC neighborhood? Yawn.

Just because you're broke doesn't mean you should be subjected to overcrowded and/or poorly regulated housing. Those policies exist to help renters from exactly this sort of crap. So, yes, in the short term, the current tenants (who are renting illegal units) may be asked to relocate. But future tenants would have access to properly regulated rental space.

It's not OP's fault someone else was being shady af.

Good job, OP. What you don't need is a house over-run with college students in a family neighborhood. I would have done the same thing--and not felt a bit bad about it.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Golden rule.
Not just gossip but you went out of your way to make someone miserable and had the nerve to come here and brag.

WHY ????

Never mind the house. You seem unwell. How does it feel to be you?
Anonymous
Meh, I don't feel bad for the owner of the house. They know what they were doing probably wasn't allowed.

This was a really crappy thing to do, especially because this rental has no impact on you whatsoever.

Duh she is hoping the owner will sell and she can buy it

The kids who are living there or planning to live there next year are now screwed and are going to have to scramble
