Confused about pregnancy test

you can have a false negative but you CANNOT have a false positive

This is OP. Not sure it’s a false positive.
But the early response early result picks up an HCG of like 5-10 I guess. That was positive again today 24 hours later. At the doctor Friday, it was negative so less than 20. My mistake probably to buy a sensitive test.
It points to basically something not viable, in my opinion since the level is clearly low. It’s possible, I guess, that my level will increase or double now. but given my age of 43 and that sex was April 12, seems unlikely this pregnancy is viable at all with a low HCG. But, it’s causing me a lot of stress for sure because it’s possible the levels will keep increasing. I’m anemic, so i’m scared of taking the pills if I must to end the pregnancy. A natural miscarriage is really what i’m hoping for…..

not true. There are beta HCG secreting tumors that can make people test positive on pregnancy tests who aren't pregnant. Not saying that's what's happening to OP though.

I’m guessing you are “pregnant” based on the positive test, but I use quotes because as you noted the hcg may not be high enough to really be a viable pregnancy. Since you don’t want to be pregnant, I’ll send good thoughts your way that nature runs its course and you can put this scare behind you.

I know you mentioned low progesterone, but since you can’t take BC to 100% prevent events like this, maybe your DH could look into a vasectomy. Mine got it done and he was back to pretty much normal the next day. He said it wasn’t too bad at all.

Not true. I tested pregnant for several weeks after my D&C

That’s normal. HCG lingers. How far along had you been?

It is true, because You were pregnant before the D&C. There were still hormones in your system.

OP, I had a very similar situation. I’m a miscarriage queen and, like you, took a very sensitive home test and then basically ran to the doctor’s office. The did a blood test and very low/not viable HCG was present. I started a very, very heavy period days later. The doctor said most women wouldn’t have even known they were pregnant but because I’d been through it so many times before I am hypersensitive to body feelings and attuned to the smallest of changes.

If there wasn’t enough HGC for the test in the doctors office to pick it up when you were a week late, I’d say it’s not viable. Wishing you the best, OP

you need a hcg blood test. you can get it on your own: https://www.walkinlab.com/products/view/hcg-pregnancy-quantitative-serum-test

You are pregnant, OP. I agree that with your medical history and age, the likeliest outcome is a natural miscarriage. You won't necessarily lose more blood is it's triggered by a pill, though! That decision is entirely up to you, and will center around your lifestyle: if you have a demanding career or planned travel, for example, you might want to schedule your miscarriage with a pill so that it least interferes with your life: start on a Friday, take the WE, maybe add a day off on Monday, that sort of thing. You will not be able to go to work for at least a couple of days once your miscarriage starts.

I'm borderline anemic. I've had natural miscarriages that varied enormously in symptoms. One where I bled enormously for a few days and then it was over. I did not become anemic. One where I bled for a month, not massive amounts, but it was like a month-long period. I went to my Ob at the 30 day mark, and she scolded me (gently) for not coming in sooner, because I did become anemic with that one. She sent me home with a pill, which I did not take, because the bleeding stopped that day.

But you should really have a series of HCG done, because it could also be an ectopic pregnancy. Those also have slow-rising HCG. Ectopics can be life-threatening. I strongly suggest you call you Ob-Gyn to start getting bloodwork done, so you can observe the progression of your HCG and have another ultrasound done if things look iffy.

Thanks everyone. OP with an update. Went to Safeway and they only had early result tests, clearblue 5 day sooner digital . Took that and it was positive. However, I think decided to just try the lapcirp urine home test they did in office and only one line showed up…. So it’s negative. My best guess is that my HCG is staying around 15. It’s been 24 hours since the urine test on Friday at the doctor office. I’m going to go tomorrow and do the blood test as a couple of you suggested. Still having very sore heavy breasts and no sign of blood or bleeding. I can’t say thank you enough for your help. Ectopic scares me, but I’m hoping this is just a delayed chemical / early and I won’t have to deal with that.

Why wouldn’t you just take the abortion pill.

What is wrong with you that you would say this to someone who clearly does not want to be pregnant?

I went to the clinic Friday to get the abortion pill. They wouldn’t give to me considering their ultrasound was negative along with the urine test in office negative.
Based on advice here, I’ll probably go do a walk-in lab quest blood test in the morning and then do a virtual consult for the abortion pill. I wanted to get this over with on Friday but clearly it’s just early so if it takes me needing the pill and to wait the 1-2 day shipping…. I guess I have to. I could also visit another clinic I guess depending on what the blood test shows.
