I have another profession. I was NEVER a teacher. Your reading comprehension is poor. I have multiple friends and family members who were teachers, some for decades, and they left. Only one remaining is 1 year from retirement. The above is exactly what teachers would say if you asked them. They love your kids- well, except the bratty ones, but thats what keeps them around until they cant do it anymore because its hurting their own families, their own mental health and safety, etc. You want teachers to be martyrs. Its a profession, treat it like one. |
never seen a app like TIKTOK, that gives kids tips on how to misbehave and tell them if they fail the teachers will get paid less, so they want to try it.... |
+1 A terrible, low paid job where parents constantly crap on you - who would want that? |
It's not low pay. It's mid-[pay here and high-pay in DC. But it can be terrible, depending on the administration. We don't really need smaller classes. What we need are better administration, who support teachers, and lots more discilpine including detention, suspension, and expulsion. If we expect better behavior from students, and require it, we'll get it. Until then, we won't. |
26 kids is too much for K or any lower-level age group. You can have larger class sizes with high school but then you have increased levels of curriculum to grade. Pages and pages of essays, etc. I dont think 26 well-behaved kids would be easy to teach to either. Well-behaved doesnt mean without processing issues, development issues, and other learning disabilities. |
+1, this was the same response I got from a mom when I turned down a tutoring position that paid almost $100 an hour. I could tell that the mom was a b**ch and there was no way I wanted to deal with that weekly. No, I do wanna work… Just not with a bunch of annoying parents and often annoying kids. |

I thought about doing some subbing in FCPS, then saw how low the pay is and laughed. I make between $25 and $45 facilitating small group learning for professional students, and there are zero discipline problems there. |
Why don’t they pull front office people to be subs? We were in a similar situation and when I went past the office there were at least 5 sitting there. Plus nurse, principal, asst principal and 2 counselors. |
I think parents want to support teachers but aren’t sure what to do at a macro level. Like day-to-day, of course, raise children with manners, don’t harass teachers about grades, etc. But honestly it feels like it’s *always* been teachers saying “We don’t get paid enough! We don’t get enough support!” So what are parents to do, specifically, beyond supporting teacher raises and referendums for improved school resources? If I don’t like a job or I’m not getting paid enough, I leave that job. My husband is in a union and he actively works with his union to improve pay and working conditions. But it feels like teachers are constantly being martyrs, saying nothing is enough and expecting others to listen endlessly or do the work of advocating for them. If you don’t like your job or want to get paid more, leave your job. Yes, kids will definitely suffer from the lack of educators but the market will eventually adjust to value teachers more both financially and otherwise. Sadly, the endless martyrdom of teachers has become white noise. |
I’d be willing to be a sub if they fixed discipline issues. |
The tricky thing is that most, not all, kids with "behavior issues" have an IEP in place and therefore untouchable. Little Johnny talks back, won't sit still for story time, and pushes other kids, and has anger issues...sorry. can't do anything except redirect and hope the counselor will arrive soon for his small group session per his IEP....and meanwhile there are probably 10 other kids with some sort IEP in place for something. |
Just stop sending your kids to school on Friday, along with an email stating why. |
You can make $18 an hour plus tips working in a coffee shop, $19 an hour at Aldi and $20-25 an hour as a temporary receptionist in a medical office. Why would anyone want to sub for high schoolers at $19 an hour where they get treated like crap by both students and parents? |
ESOL teacher here who got pulled to sub in 6th grade....behaviors and level of disrespect are appalling. I'm not shocked we are short on subs. |
