Apple Watch for kids?

Anonymous
I am horrible with technology so please excuse the dumb questions but I was thinking about getting my son an Apple Watch for his birthday but I don’t know much about them. He does not have a cellphone. How would he then be able to use one to make phone calls or text?

They make versions of Apple Watches with cellular service. You just need to add it to the individual/family plan. We are thinking about this for middle school and trying to hold off on a phone until 14.

There are other watches that do this, too. (Make phone calls, send texts and pictures, etc.). Not just Apple.

Thank you. So he would then have his own number associated with the watch?

DP, but yes.

We got one for my kid at 12 and it’s worked out well. Can still text with friends, but avoids some of the other distractions. Was another $10/month on our plan.

Thanks. This was very useful.

Depending on how old your kid is, you might want to look into GizmoWatch or something similar. They're nerfed to calls/text only with numbers you pre-approved, vs an apple watch which is harder to restrict and contains more apps/distractions.
