Confused about pregnancy test

Anonymous
I’m just about to turn 43.
Period is now one week late.
Had sex on April 12. Last period started around March 27. I realize now this was. Fertile day.
Positive first response test Thursday night.
Panicked and went to the clinic on Friday.
Zero findings on ultrasound and their urine test was negative. Took another first
Response test Today and it’s still positive.
I assume this is a chemical pregnancy or are the tests Just faulty? I don’t want to be pregnant. I thought maybe a chemical, but is it possible it’s just too early and that’s why nothing showed up on their urine? 20 is the test threshold. First response is lower I read. What else could be going on? Zero sign of my period which is very unusual and sore breasts daily.

Blood test.

Why did they do an ultrasound and not bloodwork? That's strange, because measuring serum hCG with a blood test is the gold standard by which a doctor diagnoses a pregnancy. Blood tests are much more sensitive than urine tests, which as you've seen, can vary wildly in their results. You can be positive with a serum hCG test and negative with a urine test.

Ask for a blood test, OP.

^ also, don't freak out about a possible baby just yet. At your age and this early in a suspected pregnancy, miscarriage rates are extremely high. I know, I'm the same age and have had 3 miscarriages in the past two years.

Thanks for the support. I suppose because the urine was negative there they didn’t want to also do blood. They instead sent me home with a lab Corp urine test. The same one I took there. I didn’t want to waste it, assuming this will turn into a chemical or something so I took my second first response test I had at home. I thought it’s possible my breasts are sore because hormones are dropping. I felt relieved leaving the doctor but now every hour with no period and now another positive test I’m into a tailspin.

I’ll add: years ago I tried to get pregnant with a third and had multiple Miscarriages. Low progesterone so I really didn’t think this was possible. Birth control gave me bad symptoms so I stopped taking it a couple years ago.
I feel like an idiot.

19:05 again. You are NOT an idiot. Same progression here. I have low progesterone too, but now it's been corrected, I still can't keep a baby, and it turns out it's because I have auto-immune clotting issues (like another DCUM poster who is on a slew of meds for it).

The doctor still made the wrong decision, BTW. Was this an OB GYN? Mine always orders a series of hCGs for me when I report a positive home pregnancy test. That's how I see my hCG increase for a while, then plummet. Yours should at least order one test.

Early. Happened with my youngest. Congrats!

If you have low progesterone, OP, it's URGENT to get this confirmed with bloodwork to get a prescription for oral micronized progesterone!!!

Otherwise you're heading towards a miscarriage.

If I were you, I'd go to an urgent care this WE and explain your situation.

This was not an ob but a NP at a women’s clinic. I think they assumed chemical since the urine was negative there or it’s just too early. So that’s why I guess they sent me home with a urine test. I am 100% not keeping this pregnancy. So it’s a question of first, am I pregnant and 2 the timing of ending this.
I’m scared. I got through the past 24 hours thinking today it would be negative. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try the test they gave me.

I think they assume it's chemical because they see a lot of chemical. With my last child, I tested positive at home, went to the dr for confirmation. They said levels were low, probably chemical, come back next week for another test. I did, and I was in fact pregnant. I wanted the pregnancy, though, and started testing a few days before I expected my period. You should be fine with timing if you live in the DMV.

Sorry OP. I'm you maybe a few years ago. I can't stay pregnant to save my life. I can't imagine how you feel, but most likely this won't stick like the others. :/

Thanks for the support….
I really appreciate it.

So you think you're pregnant but the doctor and ultrasound said you're not?

Oh I see. Then the odds are in your favor. If you really are pregnant and it's not going away by itself, your Ob-Gyn can prescribe a pill. Expect bad cramps and lots of clots. Hot pad over your tummy and OTC pain relief should get you through it. Buy the largest overnight pads for the first couple of days.

Keep us updated, OP.
