Retiring before 65

Anonymous
What is the best affordable healthcare until age 65?
I want to retire from teaching next year (at age 59) and DH would retire at the same time (age 63).
We plan to snowbird so can't get small jobs as we'll be gone for 3 months.

Affordable Care Act coverage is probably your best bet, especially if your income is low enough to qualify for federal subsidies.

Also, does your teaching job come with retiree health coverage?

It doesn’t. That’s why I’m looking around for the best thing to do.

With my pension and his deferred comp we’ll clear over 100k. But, we have travel plans annd other expenses.

I would compare ACA and COBRA-- not many other options (thanks Joe Lieberman!)

The options before the ACA were less expensive plans where the insurance company was happy to collect your money until you got sick, then they kicked you off the policy or jacked up your premiums sky high. It was the illusion of health coverage. Then, once you had a pre-existing condition, the next insurer would not cover it.

The ACA isn’t perfect but it’s better than what came before. Sounds like OP is prioritizing travel over health coverage, which is fine — and probably means they are pretty healthy. Luckily for them, if they do get seriously sick, they will still be able to buy an ACA plan, because ACA plans have to cover preexisting conditions.

OP - This online calculator can help you determine whether you are eligible for ACA subsidies.

Whatever health care plan you purchase, be sure that there is coverage in your snowbird state as well.
